Excluding college cars that are made for solar power, human power etc.

I own an '88 Ford Escort EXP. It's a two-seater, gets over 35mpg, has enough room in the back to haul a 22 cu ft refrigerator (I've done it) or to sleep (or make love) in and looks like a Mustang to the untrained eye.
I think it's about 1800 pounds, empty. Probably not the lightest.
It's predecessor, the Ford Pinto, might be one of them, though.

The lotus elise of exige is probably the lightest fast car. It is the lowest(shortest) production car in the US and it has a 4 cylinder engine from toyota, yet it out performs a v8.
