Our cats died a month ago. We, my siblings and I, really want another pet. She gave us a long list of things she doesn't want in a pet and that leaves fish and guinea pigs. We HATE fish but we love guinea pigs. She doesn't want them because she doesn't think we'll clean out their cage. She HATES smells.

Dear Mum
Please let your children have guinea pigs. I can't guarantee they will clean their cages, and if they don't, they will smell, and then you can tell them you were right. And then you could find alternative homes for them and get them a fish.
But I think they will look after them well. My children have had guinea pigs for ten years now. usually in pairs because they like company, but sometimes one has died and so the other has lived alone, and as long as they get lots of love and affection (and food) they don't ask for too much.
They have little chirps you will get to know, differen tones for different things. Ours make a racket when they hear carrier bags because they know that means we have been shopping and probably have some treats they will like. They are also good time keepers and soon grow accustomed to knowing when feed time is.
They are easy to tame and they love being with people. They don't bite. They do sometimes have little accidents on people, but if it's cleaned up right away there's no permanent damage.
They keep their cages quite neat, even designate an area for their 'bodily functions'. And if you line their cages with paper they are simple and quick to clean.
They do make lovely affectionate pets. I think your children would learn responsibility from having guinea pigs. And I even bet you will fall in love with them.
Please let them have some. How will you know if you don't set aside your concerns and try it?

Try to make a deal with her. Agree to the fish, but ask if you prove that you are taking good care of them for say, six months, proving that you are responsible, can you get a guinea pig? Fish tanks have to be cleaned too or they will stink. You have to clean the filter often too.
If you do get a guinea pig, keep it outside in a hutch. Most of the poop will drop out onto the ground and won't be in the cage. The smell will be outside and if it still smells, you can cover the poop with dirt. (It makes great fertilizer if you have a garden.)
As far as hating fish goes, they are a lot more interesting if you do some research on them. You may be able to find some interesting ones. For instance, I think that blind cave fish are pretty interesting. They can't see, yet they manage to swim around without bumping into things. If you get live breeders like guppies and platys, it is fascinating watching them give birth.

Take up responsibilties and show her that you will take care of it and don't gripe or complain when she makes u clean it out. Because if you do she won't let u have anything else. Trust me I know that from experience. My mom use to do my sister and I the same way when we were little. I'm 21 years old now and I take very good care of my precious babies. I have 2 guinea pigs, 2 dogs, 1 kitten, and 3 sugar gliders. And trust me the worse thing that smells is a sugar glider. So there ya go.

I bought a guinea pig for my birthday 5 years ago. To keep it from smelling you just have to replace the wet and soiled bedding every day. Takes 10 minutes. Keep it fed with a pellet mix, fresh water, a few cut up vegetables, and some fruit. Another 10 minutes. The good part is they don't jump so I keep mine in a 1'Hx1'Wx3'L clear rectangular rubbermaid bucket with half the lid cut away. Cheap and easy to clean.

When I wanted a pet I just bothered my parents until they finally gave in and said yes, but remember pets come with a lot of responsibility and you would have to clean out the cage quite a bit.

Make a deal with her. If u don't clean the cage then u will get punished. Or show her how responsible u can be by helping her more.

A guinea pig takes a lot of special care to keep them healthy (every day). Don't get one unless you intend to commit to take care of it everyday.

My piggies are just over 6yrs old and take a lot of care to keep them healthy. Study the web below before you get a piggie.

well you could tell her that guinea pigs are great with kids. theyre adorable too. and as for cage cleaning you really have to do that once a week. and i recomend newspaper shreddings instead of woodchips. saves money.
