You could use the batteries to electrolyse brine (ordinary table salt dissolved in water), causing chlorine and hydrogen gas to build up. If you could contain the hydrogen and chlorine somehow and let it build up to high pressure, you could let the pressure propel the rocket, or (if you allow air/oxygen in somehow) you could ignite the hydrogen.

Try searching electrolysis on google for more info if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Of course it's possible to launch a rocket with old alkaline batteries. First you'll need a secondhand Saturn 5, preferably still fully fuelled. The you'hl need an electronic fuse and a good length of bell wire. Wire the fuse up to the batteries via a switch and jam it up the Saturn 5's rear end. Stand well back and warn the neighbours if you plan on a backyard launch. You won't need to warn the police, they'll find out in their own inimitable way when it lifts off.

You might be advised to wear safety glasss and a crash helmet just in case it either blows up on the lauch pad or decides to perform a loop the loop.

If it fails to ignite, as with all unlaunched rockets, do not approach until you are sure it is safe to do so. In the case of a Saturn 5 this means leave it for at least 100 years. You might be better off covering it with an old sack and moving house. The new owners might never notice if you don't draw attention to it.

PS Let me know if you do actually get one off the ground, the last Saturn 5 I tried to launch is still in next door's back yard where it toppled over....and next door to them...and next door to them..etc. For some reason, they now shun me and cross the road whenever I go out.

-Use the batteries to produce hydrogen:
here some info:
http://www.theodoregray.com/PeriodicTable/Stories/001.1/

-you can use scratch to build the rocket, there are hydrogen rocket experiment kits for sale that let you make a rocket that goes up to 200feet, so you should easily be able to make one yourself. Just browse around a bit and look for hydrogen rocket on google. Here's an example:

and here a commercial one:

if you study those it should be enough to get you going..

if you are talking about making a rocket and using the batteries as fuel.. then that is NOT a good idea.. since alkaline batteries contain mercury.. which is highly toxic... it would not be good for the environment

you may want to apply the motor vehicle battery to ignite the rocket engine through wiring the batter too the engine w/ a swap in the middle. it would prbly be plenty a lot less complicated to purchase the type rocket ignition kit besides the undeniable fact that it really is as a lot as you.

When my unit and I were bored during exercises we used to put the heating elements of our MREs in a plastic bottle filled with water. It made for a pretty fun little "rocket".
