Avatar is a word means the Hindu belief which refers to the God in an animalic or human form.

It also means a man, or a woman, who represents an idea or quality.

And it becomes the term that refers to the picture of some one on a computer screen.

In Hindu religion God chooses to appear in different forms and uses different names. So many of the known "gods" in Hindu religion are actually the same one. An avatar is one of those manifestations of god. Some Hindus actually accept Jesus and Mohammad as avatars of their own god.
