I am a cosmetics/spa product consultant, and knowing how to apply make-up for the right occasion on a specific face is my job. Generally speaking, formal or evening make up (each one is different) are applied a bit more dramatic or heavier. It really depends on the look you are going for, but when I do someone's make up for a formal occasion I tend to play up the eyes and really make them POP!!! If the person has very thin lips, I will add a LITTLE more color than what they would normally wear, applying a lighter color on inside of the lined lips. I would bring out their eyes more and make that the focal point. If they have fuller lips, I would also play up the eyes, but not as much as if they had thinner lips. I would really bring out that pouty look wiht something that will look very sensuous with out looking like a call girl (unless that is of course the look they want to go for.) Evening make up (what you would do if you were going out to a club) is basically what you would do for everyday make up, but perhaps add a little more demension to the eyes with some hightlights and a darker color in the crease and on the outer part. Make sure to line the lower lid with one of the contrasting colors that are on your top lid. .

Formal makeup 1) takes more time 2) is heavier ("painted on") 3) darker more elabrant. You don't want your everyday makeup to look like your wearing to much (even if you are wearing a lot)

For evening makeup... you usually apply more of it because of the lighting and the shadows. Everyday makeup doesn't need to be as heavy because the sun and the natural light shows off most of your features.

Day time makeup should be more neutral. Evening makeup can be more dramatic. You can use the same colors, but the way they are applied is the difference.

Well, for starters... day makeup is light, soft & feminine. Good for work, etc.
Night makeup is very dramatic, glossy, which is why you go for the smoky eye look for evening makeup, lol!

I always change my make up from day to night. During the day I wear it lighter and simple. Then during the evening when I go out I wear it darker and more dramatic. Basically you wear it lighter and can wear what ever color but keep it simple and in the evening darker and dramatic.
