Can depend in part on the job. Ask your federal labor board, or go check out their website. If they are doing wrong, the labor board may fine them and make them change it.

It depends on the state, but I believe federal law still says if you work a standard 40 hours a week, 8 hours a day, you should be paid time and a half for up to 4 hours and double time for any above that, and you can refuse to work over 12 hours. If you have made other arrangements ahead of time with your boss, you may have to work as agreed.
OTOH, if georgie boy has done another back room deal, he may have changed the law.
The problem is even if the boss is required to follow the law, if you are working at-will, your boss can fire you whenever he wants, so you may be right but out of a job. Check with your local labor relations board for specific information about the laws in your area.

24. Firemen work 4 days on and 3 off in some cases. There is no guarantee when the alarm will sound and they must be available if it does. Mind you your question is not targeted at firemen. Regular work shifts are 8 hours but change depending on what line of work a person is in. Vis a vis, firemen and EMS personnel.

I believe in the U.S. they are required to give you 8 hours off.
But with the right amount of motiviation I guess someone could be forced to work for the full 24 hours.
Evidently it's not that big of a deal since you have time to ask the question on Yahoo.

you can't be forced to work any hours, after 8 you should get time and a half. No more than 12 in one day, unless your doing some kind of shift work with regularly scheduled breaks, ...If it was me,I'd walk.

Are you in the US? What type of job? What have you signed on your contract?
There is no one answer to this question. If you sign off on it, they can make you work any number of hours. However almost no businesses would risk this as they would lose all of their workers and risk civil lawsuits at that.

in most countries, you cannot be "forced" to work, you could quit, however there are several jobs which require shifts longer than a day, many doctors for example have 72 hr shifts.
