the ball is passed to a player behind the opposing teams defence. Its so teams cant cherry-pick and just wait in front of the net.

A few tips: You cannot be off-side from a corner. You cannot be off-side in your own half of the field. You cannot be off-side if there are two of the opposing team between you and the goal line WHEN the ball is passed to you. You cannot be off-side if a member of the opposing team back passes the ball towards his own goal area, either deliberate or by accident and you are in a position where you would have been off-side if a member of your own team had made the pass. You can be in an off-side position but if you are not interfering with play (in the opinion of the referee) play may continue.

The player has been passed the ball in a position where none of the defenders on the other team are between him and the goal (its a fairness thing)

A player cannot cross a particular line on the field before the ball gets there. This rule should be eliminated, it slows down the game and hinders scoring.

when an offensive player passes a defense without the ball being passed to him. this leaves the player with an unfair advantage.
