For example, that little Pomeranian dog used to be the size of Saint Bernard. Dragonflies were enormous.

Let me clarify this. Animals have changed in their size over many years. How did that happen?

Umm a lot is to due to how much it makes sense for the animal. For example in Beligum they found an island with dino bones. They found that those dino bones were smaller then what the should be and other animals are smaller. If you had a lot of elephants on an island they would be smaller bc their is less space to move. The reason why dragon flies were bigger is because they had the material to support themselves but also remember some scientist don't think they were dragon flies but maybe be may flies or damsel flies.

WIth dogs, it was selective breeding. With most other animals, it was evolution, which basically means that an organism adapts to its environment so that it can best survive in it. When the environment changes, the organism changes to survive within it.

Prehistoric dragonfiles, I dunno. Ask a paleontologist. But perhaps there was something in the environment that made its large size advantageous, or perhaps it helped it avoid predators or find prey. It could be a lot of things.

There's more to it than that, but that's the basics.

Body size is easy for nature to select on, and consequently there is a lot of genetic variation for body size out there too. Making a bigger or smaller body is a matter of hormones and cell division control.

There's not enough space here to delve into that. Suffice to say, "it's evolution, baby", as Pearl Jam would say.
