It starts up, but seems to take awhile to idle proper. Then when Im drinving about a mile or so, it doesn't seem to have much power anymore and when I come to a stop or hit the brakes, it dies out. It almost seems like it is getting flooded easily, but could be something totally different. No nothing about a simple little engine...Could a tune up solve the problem? Or is it something else?

tune it up, replace the fuel filter, check the air filter and clean the throttle plate, and adjust the valves once in a while, thats about all you need to do to one of those.

If your asking us if it needs a tune up then this tells me that you havent had one in a while. Yes, replace everything, air, fuel, cap rotor wires points and condenser. Your distributor points are probably fried and way out of adjustment. They need to be replaced now. When the poiunts are worn down, this means they stay closed longer, (higher dwell readings), and they op[en for a brief time,. Not long enough to fire the spark to ignite in the cylinder head. Yes you have points in the VW.

fuel injected or Carb? most likely carb but both have fuel filters, check filter for rust, the tanks corrode pretty bad on thoughs old things and fill filter and carb with rust, need to clean real good to solve problem and sometimes replace fuel tank

Buddy, you have a dirty fuel filter. If it isnt that, take it to a mechanic but, I'm sure its a dirty fuel filter.
