The most important thing is that the server appraoch the table with a smile - like he/she is really happy in the work that they're doing. If I'm in a restaurant for the first time, I'm open to menu suggestions and recommendations. Promptness and anticipating the needs of our table are critical as well, and checking back to make sure food quality is excellent. I'd like my server to ask me if everything is great vs. asking "Is everything okay?"

Knowledge of the job at hand is a plus. Knowing the specials and our names, if we are regulars, would be nice. Personal attitude is everything. Some nights may require more acting than others. Just think... If the server does not want to be there... should we? Drink refills and attention to detail, a positive attitude...

Well, lets see....
I dont think a casual dining resturant should provide any different service then a fine dining establishment. Lets face it, the only real difference between the two is the price of the entrees.
A waitperson who is clean and neat, who is polite and clear spoken, that can give you the specials of the day without making it sound like he's repeating it for the 1000th time.
Asking when you would like your soup, salad or appetizer with or before your meal. Remembering the water that you asked for, serving the meal before it gets cold, clearing the used plates, refilling the water glasses or coffee cups before they are drained to the bottom and thanking you for coming into their resturant.
I consider myself a pretty big tipper....usually 20 to 25 percent of the bill. However, if you tick me off....you'll be lucky if you get a dollar bill with a note on it.
PS to jncocobean....LOL...Yeah except when its a pretty waitress and she sits down next to me!! Then its me trying to explain to my date that I never saw this woman before!!

Most certainly. When the waitperson greets me promptly and takes my beverage order and comes back promptly for my meal order.
When the wait person does not refer to myself and my husband as "what'll you guys have?"
When my salad does not have a lot of dead lettuce in it!
And lastly, I would prefer to take my check up to the cashier myself as I don't want a credit card out of my sight and I do not feel comfortable leaving money on the table, except for the tip.
My husband and I eat out several time a week. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest.

I agree with most of the answers already given.... someone who is pleasant to be around makes all the difference in the world. Another big hit for me and my husband is when the waiter/waitress pays attention to our daughter. Treat her like a paying customer and you'll get big tips from us!!!

I don't really care about cheesy grins. I just like a waitperson who is unrushed in conversing with me, has good knowledge of the menu items (at least how it looks and is prepared, I don't care if they've had it or like it), and can talk about something besides a)the weather, and b)the job they are doing--waiting tables. Boring.

*quick with the refills *don't ask me a hundred times 'how i'm doing' *don't kneel, squat, or sit with me to take my order *be pleasant, professional and polite *have a freakin' clue about the menu *Drop off the bill in a timely manner and take my money soon after *Don't say "How are we doing this evening" cause I know how I'm doing, but not you. It's stupid.

I like it when they sit down at the table with you, to take your order or explain things to you. It brings them down to your level, and makes for a better rapport with them, and I always leave a bigger tip when they are confident, friendly, and attentive.

I like it when they keep your glass full of whatever beverage you are drinking and provide straws and napkins. I tip when good service is given.
