Why do footballers use hair gel? Because they can and enjoy it.
In my opinion, any blue Sports gel (with the highest numbered grade) works best. Especially since it is mostly water/sweat proof and lasts ALL DAY, holding your hair back and keeping it styled at the same time. A good style keeps an athlete more confident with their game.
From experience, it is logical to keep your hair away from your eyes while playing sports. For the same reason some athletes use headbands - to saturate their head sweat. Especially if they have long hair. But as the headband absorbs sweat, over time it causes them to reek of bad body odor.
The right hair gel simply works better. Hair gel even smells better. As an athlete sweats, the sweat is absorbed into the hair while the gel activates a more "refreshing" scent. More appealing while signing autographs or conducting post-game interviews.
Plus it keeps their faux-hawk hair lookin' cool for the audience.

The real reason is, for italians anyway, is so they can get their head in the butt of the referee, Advantages of this are being world renown cheats of the beautiful game,Take Juventus and AC Milan for instance with their scandal overshadowing their world cup win over Australia,
By the way did you see the penalty Italy got?
Thats why they have gel in their hair, the ref was just wainting for him to fall down, Gerrard, lampard, ronaldinho,Puyol dont wear gel, I guess they rely on true skill !!!
Gel is for a Vanity queen

The reason is simple. The main reason they do it is to prevent sweat from sticking to their hair, therefore sweat do not drip directly in their eyes. Another reason is the fact that messy hair can distract and bother them in the pitch, but an organized hair would solve this problem. Spot light is another factor that indicates the usage of gel by soccer players.

hey give me a break. its a modern world. soccer is no more just a game.technology has made this game a science.
the logic is simple. sweat and gel chemicaly reacts to produce a substance knows an swetogel. swetogel flows down all the way from hair to feet and reacts with the shoes of footballer. the product of this reaction is rather strange and yet to be named by the scientists. the chemical composition of this product causes the football to be fully control by the player.

They put it on for the image...they need to look good even when they're playing so they can earn more face time on ads and whatnot. If a player kicks an amazing goal, he probably wouldn't want the picture of him kicking the goal to be on the next Adidas ad with his hair all in his face and not looking the best he can after running hard for 90 minutes.

I'm gonna have to agree with most of the people here when they say....it's cause of the endorsements. Not only that, but, think about how many countries are watching it. The photos taken...everything. I dare ya to find one picture where their hair isn't all done up. It's not cause it "helps" with the game...if that were true, we'd ALL be wearing gel in our hair :P

they don t put gel on their hair it is just water and it helps you cool down and relax before a game. it has nothing to do with kicking the ball you can use a rubber band for that. It has more to do with heat and relaxation. I do it too. it seems to be a European thing because my fellow team members dont seem to understand why i do it and they make fun of me.
