You are going to want to focus on biology, chemistry, psychology, and child development. You are going to do 4 years of undergrads, maybe with a pre-med major, psych or child development minor, followed by medical school, internship, and residency.

You will need your MD to become a psychiatrist (that means medical school!). You will need a PhD or PsyD to become a psychologist. In other words at least 8 years of schooling.
But as far as your undergrad courses go, you definitely want to consider majoring in psychology. If you are leaning towards the psychiatrist (as opposed to psychologist), you will need to take more natural sciences (chemsitry, biology) and other courses that would be pre-reqs for medical school.

In order to become a psychiatrist you will need to major in psychology AND fill all the requirements to be admitted to medical school. Psychiatrists are ALSO doctors, and have an license to practice medicine.
