Instant messaging is just as safe as going to a mall, a movie, or anything else. It's not the program that poses the dangers, it's the behavior of those using it. The creeps that are preying on people via instant messaging are probably going to the mall, the the movies, the playground, public pools, etc.

I personally never use any type of Messenger, but I'm on Myspace and that's even more unsafe I guess. I guess you just need to be careful about the information you put out on the Web. Most information can be obtained through a phone book too and people don't worry about those. I think we're all a little too safety conscious sometimes. The reason I don't use messenger is because it's so much easier to just call someone on the phone when I need to know something. I don't have a lot of time to just "chat" with people.

About as safe as any other form of internet communication. Email can be just as dangerous and risky as instant messaging.

Totally safe, the messages can't be saved and there is no access to personal info unless you give it out. Best wishes

That is an interesting question.
I love my IM------
I can talk to friends and family and that is fine ,
Then up pops this one and that one, and you need to be very careful who you allow on your "friends" list .
Check the profile and discard a no photo ,no detail application .
I have experienced some very dubious visitors ( and hey! ho ! === i zap them into oblivion )
Or if they are very obnoxious, i report them , then delete
. It is a wonderful thing to talk to people from all over the world (IM)
and i am amazed to be able to converse so freely.
but i hold myself personally , to blame, if a slug gets into my system .
be wary but have fun, enjoy it too.

I think it's really safe, it just depends on how you use it. I'm only familiar with AIM so if you're talking about AIM, don't directly connect with people you don't know, don't link your personal websites (xanga, Myspace) in your AIM profile, etc.
Unless you made it so only the people on your buddylist can contact you, that's what I do so I actually put personal information in my AIM profile.

Its safe with people you know, but people you meet in chat rooms can be dangerous. If you make a seperate account with NO information about yourself just for talking in chats, and don't give anyone information about yourself, your safe, but if you give people information about you, then you can be in danger.
