What are some of the things that could make a fuel pump go out. A friend of mines went out a few weeks ago and they said something was put in it. What could be put in it to make it just weaken and quit working? Water?

One of thebig problem with G M autos is that some people let their gas get very low before a fill up.You should always keep at best a quarter tank full to keep the electronic fuel pump cool.

Old age is one. Bad gas is definitely another. If you get a restriction in the fuel lines near the pump or the fuel filter (the filter is clogged with junk, for example), the pump will try to run at full capacity...running it down very quickly.

Electrical problems with the pump can also be an issue. If it happens to you, check the fuel filter; then I'd do electrical diagnosis...and as a last resort, remove the fuel pump itself. Or, better yet, get an experienced shop to look at it for you, since the work is dirty and it can be dangerous.

Fuel pumps are constant run small electric motors.Like anything else they wear out.Almost any granular substance can clog the filter screen on the pump its self, even rust from inside the tank on older cars.Water will not ruin the pump but your car wont run on it either.IN my learned opinion the most common cause of failure is heat.Believe it or not that little motor is cooled by being submerged in gasoline.$5 bucks a day to keep it full,is a lot better than $5 bucks a day to do your running.
