I know a black man in South Florida who's Great Grandfather or Grandfather was in the civil war. A lot of them fought to protect their homes!

Is that H.K. and Terry Lee Edgerton in your picture?

It's estimated that over 900,00 black soldiers fought for the Confederacy between 1861 and 1865. The Union Army actually had black regiments that were raised during the Civil War to fight alongside the Union Army (including the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and the many United States Colored Troops Regiments).

Just to make it clear, most of these black freedmen didn't support the Confederacy, but were rather trying to protect the south from being completely destroyed (physically. Unfortunately, this happened all too often thanks to the Union's destructive methods of preventing material from falling into Confederate hands.) After the Union established control in most of the South (in Louisiana, for example) many of these all African-American units joined the Union.

Yes, it's not very well known but there were many (thousands) of free blacks that served in combat positions in the confederate military, before the north even considered allowing blacks to enlist, many fought with bravery and distinction.

Type in black+confederate in your search engine. a pretty fair number of sites come up , both pro and con. I know that at least one apparently authoritative book has come out in the last few years, but I can't recall the title offhand.
