should the pledge be optional in public schools, where religion is not SUPPOSED to be a part of the curriculum, or are people just getting too upset about trivial things that don't matter and it should be mandatory?

everyone has their own opinions on this issue - i was just wondering what they were...

The best suggestion I heard was having the students say the pledge of allegiance, but not everyone has to say "under god" if they don't want to. That takes the religion out of it.

But there should be some reminder that we do owe allegiance to this country (via the flag). Then maybe civic responsibility would once again have a place in younger society.

I think it should actually be the other way around though, I would like to see "under god" removed from the pledge and then anyone who wants to say it while the pledge is being said is more than welcome.

No, it should never be optional. If a citizen of this great nation does not like our pledge maybe he/she should find another country with a pledge more to their liking. The pledge was written in a time of history when christianity was a way of life for all and not meant to be insulting to anyone. If we start denying or changing what has come before us in history, we will not only make the same mistakes but even bigger ones. When we pledge ourselves to this country we aren't only saying words, we are swearing our allegiance to it also.

I feel that religion already has it's own venue and membership is voluntary. If you are a citizen of the United States, you should have to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in schools and work. Citizenship is voluntary, if you don't like it here, leave.

I dont think it should be. I am a very religious person but I believe that the government is throwing God and the bible into certain situations and not into others, its like they cant make up their minds. Yes it would be good for our whole country to follow one common leader(God etc.) , and not have any objections to one common saying but it dosent work like that and probably never will. I think spirituality and religion shouldnt be a part of our government and laws at all. Your relgion is personal, something sacred, its what you BELIEVE in your heart, it is an aspect of your life such as your sex life.

I see nothing wrong with saying the Pledge of alliegence. Most won't honor it anyway. The kids today have no pride in this country.
