For all of those that will answer this like "why? Are you not a Democrat? Everyone's entitled to their own opinion etc etc, I'm well aware of that. I'm just trying to get opinions as to why people chose whatever party they claim to be. Thanks :-)

I think you would have to understand the difference between a democrat and a republican to know.

A democrat, by the definition of the original democratic party's purpose, is to promote democracy. Democracy being that all people are equal and have an equal say in politcal matters. basically a democrat supports the people and their pursuit of happiness.

A republican believes in domininace or ruling over the people. Republicanism is the ideology of governing a nation as a republic. A republic is a state in which sovereignty is invested in the people, rather than in a hereditary elite. A republic is the opposite of an aristocracy, an oligarchy, or dictatorship. (It is compatible with a nominal constitutional monarch, or with an elected monarch.)

I personally do not support any party. All of the parties have strayed from their own purpose and no longer represent the people that have supported them (other than people elected into offices inside their own party).

The fact is I vote for who I think is the most honest and will do the best job possible. Although, it is hard to tell these days because most politicians are professional liars. And many of their promises are not kept because they have little power over their branch of government. Ultimately the ones that control the money have control, especially congress and the senate. If we keep electing the same people for those positions, we will keep having the same problems with our country, regardless of who is president.

I did see where you asked the same question of Republicans so I will try to answer without comments. I have been a Democrat since I was old enough to vote. That occurred for me during Vietnam. I do realize that the war in Nam was both a Republican and a Democratic war but I was so anti war that the Dem's appealed to me. The Dem's were more compassionate and caring. That appealed to me. Having worked in hospitals since I was 18, I saw the suffering that poverty could bring. And the Republicans that I knew were, on the whole, people with money or planning on making money and they didn't care about anyone but them and theirs. Sorry that's the best nutshell I could give you. Of course there are more reasons but you don't need a book.

Democrats actually have very little to do with democracy. Actually, if you look back in history, you'll find that the Republican party follows much more closely to the original democratic values that established this country. Dems shifted sides during the 19th century (following the establishment of the Republican party).

And anyone who has an education knows that FDR didn't save the US from the Great Depression. The Japanese did when they bombed Pearl Harbor. Outdated FDR policies still plague and hinder the true power of this nation.

Well - I am a Democrat because I believe in fredome, and basic human liberty. I also tend to believe in the good in people and the dignity of every human being. Clearly those are not things that Republicans value any longer.

I USED to be a republican. When I was in High School, I was a young republican... but since W. and Dr. Evil came to power and being a republican has become a religious crusade where torturing people is OK, violating civel liberties is OK, and going to war to avenge one's daddy is keen, where the Geneva Convention is laughed at as being quaint, where the administration has turned into the terroists they clame to fight - I can't suport that.

I just can't suport Yosemite Sam for president.

It is true that teh democratic party does not have a particularly moving platform, or any real message to rally around right now - but quite frankly - they don't have to - not beeing Republican - not being evil, is enough.

I am a liberal democrat to be more precise. Most people dont realize that without the efforts of the great administration of FDR, the USA may not have been able to recover from the great depression as it did. The legacy of that administration is widely felt today and most people dont even know who to thank for it. If we basically all thought in terms of those being well off having a responsibility to help those who are less fortunate then most of the problems we face in this world would be so much more manageable.

I dont know how to answer your question, since I am not an American and I dont exactly know how the system works there. But I guess that democrats are democrats because the choose to be democrats, and because of their education, parents, friends and circumstances. Also it makes sense to be a democrat, sinse the US try to establish democracy in other countries and not 'republicanism'.

Everyone turns to the people they look up to for advice on political subjects. We take the info they give us and use it in our own heads as a means to understand which way they will vote. I am a soldier and someone no longer with us told me once, " Son what do you believe in?" He was a catholic, and I a Christian, so I told him, and he responded, "I don't believe in that, but I do believe in your right to believe in that." So whether you believe in the same thing or not we all should respect the other person's choice.

I hope the answers are genuine. I hope answers can be real, positive reasons, without Republican bashing, distracting from "the real reason why". Waiting for enlightenment.
