Pirates!
The nursery rhyme is about Blackbeard the pirate!
The 24 blackbirds is about how he would send a small crew of two dozen over on rowboats to attack a ship first.

Wasn't that a dainty dish to set before the king

I would just do a couple of blackbirds, marinated in herbs and braised or barbecued.
