I honestly don't think the songs like that will affect her very much. When you're that age, you just like to hear a good beat and be silly. Kids really don't think about the lyrics of a song very much, and if they do..they really already know what a lot of it means at 11. To me, violence is worst than sex. Sex shouldn't be seen as too shameful, although an 11 year old shouldn't be involved with it. It's natural and it's love. They should just be educated the right way. Which she is going to find out, if not already, a lot about sex. Now, I would monitor television and movies. They are pretty powerful, in my own opinion, on state of mind. I think when you see certain visions, like for example smoking, and somone beautiful and powerful is doing it, that it makes it seem more okay. I'm mostly against violent movies that are sick. I don't believe anyone should watch them.

I think that as her older brother you have a responsibility to her to help guide her as she grows up and to look out for her and protect her. Now obviously that's a responsibility that you take very seriously, as evidenced by the fact that you are hesitant to let her listen to sexually explicit or otherwise inappropriate music. Personally I think it's great that you are proactive in your little sister's life and in her activities.
On the other hand though, I just wanted to tell you something I remember from my own childhood. I'm 24 now and I remember listening to a lot of songs when I was younger, and I loved to sing along with them. Now that I'm older, sometimes i will hear those old songs come on the radio when I'm flipping through stations, and I'll tell you, I was shocked at some of the things I was blindly singing along to! I had no idea what most of them meant, or implied. (And I got most of the lyrics wrong, too, but I had fun singing them anyway!)
That being said, I don't think there's anything wrong (and in fact, there's everything right) with you stepping in and saying she's just too young to be listening to music that's the equivalent of an R-rated film. Good luck explaining it to her, though! Older brothers have a huge impact on their younger siblings. My brother is older than me and I have always looked up to him. If you tell your sis that music isn't cool and give her something else that isn't so objectionable to listen to she'll be proud to listen to something her big brother thinks is cool.
By the way, I hope your parents are aware of the parenting styles of some of her friends, because that whole watching Playboy around the kids freaks me out. I wouldn't want my little sister or daughter exposed to that kind of thing.

Actually, I think your doing your job of being a big brother and wanting to protect your little sister. As much as we hate to admit it, sex is so overrated now. It's all over the place, and there is no such thing as a normal childhood anymore so I can totally understand your concern. We are constantly bombarded with sex, nudity, etc. and even young children. If you pay attention to some of the dialogue in childrens cartoons, it's very inappropriate. So bottom line, no, you are not a bad brother.

i kinda know how u feel. but what kinda music do u expect her to listen 2? she probably knows what the song means and if not, she'll find out. for now just let her listen to her music. and by the way i think that now a days listening to that kind of music is a normal childhood. i learned about all that stuff when i was like 12 but my 12-year old sis learned about it when she was in 2nd grade. but its cool how u care and u aint a bad brother

I think you are a very good brother! It's not right for 11 and 12 year olds to be listening to that kind of stuff. Kudos for looking out for your little sister!

How old are you? She shouldn't listen to that stuff at all. (even when she's 12, 13, etc) Why aren't your parents monitoring what she watches? a lot of people think that stuff is harmless, but if so, why not write lyrics about harmless stuff, then? They write that garbage, because that's what people like, and no one wants to be different, and start a new trend. I wouln't give it to her, but try to find her some good alternatives, that rock out, but are inspiring. Try contemporary Christian, like Toby Mac, Zoe Girl, newsboys, etc.

You are a GREAT older brother. Older brothers are supposed to protect their little sisters, and that's what you're trying to do. You may be fighting a losing battle (societal norms are operating against your best intentions), but huge props to you for at least trying. One thing, though: How about a normal childhood until she's at least 18? :o)

You cant go wrong with the Black Eyed Peas and if you think about it My humps isnt as bad as Candy Shop. So stick with the more valued Black Eyed Peas and stay away from 50 Cent. From the song I have heard from the black Eyed Peas that song is as bad as it gets. So I also recremend you get her the edited version and I also recremend the song Pump It by the Black Eyed Peas.

I think you are a very good brother. I feel the same way about my little brother. He feels the same way about that stuff. But then again he isn't mature enough to have an ipod but healways tries totalk about sex to his friends. He says they all talk about it which i think is absurd. You should continue in the direction you are going and protect your sister from that.
