My great grandmother told me they used folded rags and pinned them inside their underwear. They always had a supply on hand so they could be washed out as needed; As always with blood, it was best to deal with as soon as possible. Of course, she said they stuck pretty close to home too!!

Rags. That is why men will say "she is on the rag". It is an old term. When women had their periods they wore old rags down their to collect just like a pad. Tampons were invented in the 20s or 30s (read the tampax box) so most women wore those who wanted to not use rags. Then in the 70s women had tampons still and used cotton pad type things that you had to wear not underwear but a system of straps to hold the pad on.

That is where the term "On the rag" comes from. They would tie old rags around them like a diaper and use that until it was dirty and then take them off and wash them and hang them out to dry. I don't have solid proof of that, or where you could research it, but that is what I have been told.

They used rags and washed them out. That's why some people use the term "on the rag" when referring to a woman who has her period.
