bcoz we don't trust our heart. We've forgotten that following the heart won't lead us into trouble. The heart is a silent calm voice that never misleads cuz it's not based on unpredictable emotions. It seems in this society we're ingrained with ideas that if you are open and trust your heart you are somehow gullible or will be taken advantage of. It's a case of mistaken identification. We're trained as children that we need to be a productive member of society and for that we need the brain/intellect and nothing else. Nothing wrong with using the brain when it's needed but being too much in the head seems to be a sickness these days. Great question.

I have come to this realization that most actually do use their heart more than their brain, this is because the brain in most is not fully functioning.
My proof is most people look but do not see, hear but do not listen. Just look at how some people interpret your questions.
So that really only leaves their heart as their guide... the world is still a pretty dark place because the heart of most is still filled with anger and fear because as you have said the underlying drive is spiritual and to understand that they have to use their brain and if it is not turned on then..... well look around, you know what I mean?
The way to the heart is through the brain, I'm still trying to work out how to turn their brains on, at the moment is one at a time...

Because are heart, first of all, is only an organ.
Secondly, I assume by 'heart' you mean emotions in general, including love and hate (yes, hate comes from the 'heart' just as love does). If you do indeed mean emotions by your use of the term heart, then I'd say we do in fact use our heart a lot. Everything a human does is based on a combination of emotions (which are chemical imbalances in the brain) and knowledge of prior events that are similar (or could be applied).
So we do use our hearts a lot.

If you look at the heart as the seat of emotion, and not just as an organ that makes the body function, you need the power of the brain to control it.

By using our heart we mean thinking according to our emotions
By using our mind (brain) we mean thinking according to our reasons (things around us)
The reason we may not use our heart more or as much as we use our brain, is that we may not trust our emotions due to past bad experiences in our lives.
A balance approach should be used by using your mind and heart together

Funny. I was thinking the other day about why humans use their hearts so much instead of their brains! (I am the worst!) Emotions get us into all kinds of trouble that a simple moment of consideration would avoid.

I think most people probably use their emotions TOO much, especially teenagers. "Oh he smiled at me! It must be TRUE LUUUUUUV!" And a lot of people nowadays have little or no impulse control, which is acting because of their emotions before they think about the consequences.
I think it'd be impossible to live a fulfilling life if logic was the only way you made choices. But when using emotions, you have to bring a little logic into play too otherwise you might end up doing some pretty stupid stuff. 1+1 is always the same, but emotions are pretty damn fickle.

We should use it as much, our heart guides us to what our feelings want, but our brain warns us of the dangers. If we could use these harmoniously then I'm certain everyone would be better off.

I do not think that it is so. Men rarely use their brain which is the seat of thiking. I have with me the evidence of Bertrand Russell who hoped that men think at least half a minute in six months!
