To answer your question, ask yourself the following:

(Participation) How successful is a group working towards a project if only one person is working? Two people are working together? Three people are working together? Everyone is working together? Can one person not get along working with others destroy the whole group? Can a person participate in a group and not contribute to the group? Can a person contribute and not participate?

(Leadership) What kind(s) of leader(s) is/are needed for a group to be successful? Are there more than one leader? What would happen if there is no leader? Why is leadership important? Can a leader also follow? Can a follower also lead? Can a person be both a leader and a follower? What happens when a person is neither? Is a leader better than a follower? Is a follower better than a leader?

(Motivation) What motivates a group? Can a group be successful without motivation? What happens when one person is motivated and the other is not? How can the motivated person motivate the person that is not? Is personal motivation different from group motivation? Is your personal motivation good for your group? Is the group motivation good for you personally?

By the way, if you watched Donald Trump's Apprentice on NBC-TV, you get an idea of how participation, leadership and motivation skills are demonstrated in group process.

The group process emphasizes each of these skills because all members must use them to succeed in the the group. A group project is designed to benefit by group participation. Each member must speak up and bring their individual ideas to the forefront of the discussion. This allows a better flow of ideas and a more complex complete solution. In order to do this, the group as a whole and individually must be motivated. Motivation is the key element of group success. If one member of a group does not care about the outcome, the whole satisfaction and ability level of the group is compromised. The group is only as strong as its weakest member, those members who are not motivated are weak. Finally leadership in the group is a must. One person must be responsible for bringing all ideas together in an equal environment. While it is a group decision, the leader must guide the other members in a suitable direction and make sure the group stays on task. Without a leader, many groups that would otherwise have been successful cannot function as a team.
