America works with the governments that are in place. It protested apartheid, but worked with the government as a player in the international community.
America only truly targets foreign governments if it perceives them to in some way be a threat to America. South Africa wasn't.

U.S. giants IBM, General Motors, Exxon Mobil, J.P Morgan Chase, Citigroup, Caltex Petroleum Corporation, Ford Motor Company, and the Fluor Corporation. All of these contributed (and are being sued as a result) to the apartheid regime in S. Africa.
If an apartheid regime is an "institutionalized system of racial disenfranchisement." we might be wise to divest in Israel right now because the same people are helping the daily slaughter of innocent Palestinian civilians by the Israeli apartheid regime.

Yes sir they did.You can not imagine that system would have existed and be sustained without the tacit support and acceptance of the UK and the USA. You see Margaret Thatcher and Cheney both called Mandela a terrorist for wanting what every decent human being in this universe would want. FREEDOM. When Mandela was freed, there was a massive concert of celebration and thanks. All the dignitaries of the world were invited and Mrs Thatcher, as a World leader was excluded. Tells you all you need to know. ^ o ^
DAR.. Isn't that morally bankrupt? Is the USA then surprised it is steadily losing respect and influence in the world. The USA now has no other option, but the military option, because other steadfast nations will not accept its arguments. How long will this last? The US is becoming a world Pariah.

America ( corperate)avoided international sanctions by selling manufacturing rights to the Sth Africans ie Ford , boeing, and other large companies.through european licenceholders..there was also a real worry that the worlds biggest supplier of diamonds could fall into soviet hands as well so there was covert govt intervention on a large scale..interesting fact..only 2 countries had "white only"immigration policies up to the 1970,s South Africa and Australia...

yes we did and the reason is simple, we needed a certain diamond for military grade lasers, then the same diamond was found in brazil at the point that the two would line up if the earth was still 1 giant land mass. as soon as the government found that we no longer needed to be nicey nicey with south africa, so we began to scream apartheid, you can't do that.
