I've applied to maybe a dozen jobs online. They seem within my reach; I'm not applying to jobs that I'm not qualified for. I have a B.A., a stellar transcript, and good references from my previous employer. This is the first time that I'm trying for a job even remotely related to my field, and I've never even received a call back about my resume. I think if I could just get an interview, I could effectively sell myself... but I don't even make it to that step! I'm going to a staffing firm on Monday because I'm fed up with this process, but can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

Okay -- how many jobs should I expect to apply for before getting one? What's the norm?

I think a staffing firm would be your best bet at your point. For some odd reason this happens to everyone. I can remember being over qualified for certain positions that I applied for and would never get a call back . You may want to take a look at your resume and make sure it fits and sells yourself properly. I decided to change career paths because the business end of the deal doesnt really get you anywhere these days.

You are probably not doing anything wrong. If you are applying to online jobs in a particular popular job area then the companies are either 1) being bombarded by applicants or 2) they don't have the existing man power to interview everyone.
I would do some research on the companies you are applying for if that information is available and begin contacting them off line as well. Depending on your field, most "good" jobs are obtained through networking with friends, families, acquantainces, co workers, classmates, etc. You need to make it known to everyone that you are looking and you'll be amazed at what opportunities come along when enough people know.

A dozen isn't even a days work! Approach job hunting as a job and apply yourself like you were getting paid.

Nothing. Companies just don't trust people that apply on-line for jobs. They post the add on the Internet because they have to, but they don't select any CVs. You should go to a staffing firm.

The best way to get a job is to already be working. Employers like that. Any thing will do, part time, full time, volunteering. Show some initiative!
