There are several ways to know:
First, only the female black widow of the genus latrodectus is venomous to a dangerous degree; males are virtually harmless. Female widows are JET BLACK with bright red/yellow markings underneath the abdomen; sometimes like an hourglass, others can be like two fat lines or an irregular shape.
Widows are dangerously venomous from birth; makes no difference how old or large; and all widow bites should be treated with antivenin, which is made from the venom of black widow spiders. It is the only treatment. Sucking the poison, etc., will do little good; the venom is delivered in such tiny amounts and very close the the surface of the skin. The venom is a very strong neurotoxin that can leave the victim in extreme pain in as little as 15 to 20 minutes after the bite, with after-effects lasting in some cases for life. They are seldom fatal unless the victim is very allergic, or has been bitten my numerous, or is small (like a baby).
They live in dark, and damp areas; the widow's web is very very strong and 'crackles' loudly when disturbed. The web is also very irregular appearing haphazard and without form.
Any bite should be attended to IMMEDIATELY.

A Black Widow female spider is jet black and shiny, with a red hour glass shape on its stomach. The body of the spider is large in the third section and the legs are long and delicate. They move fast, so watch out! They build egg sacks in remote places, releasing more of the little critters within a few days. The bite from a Black Widow is not much more critical than a bee sting, but if you are allergic to bees, see a doctor immediately.
They are interesting, but I am NOT a spider lover so we kill them asap when finding them in this area. Where do you live?

Wolf spiders are pretty harmless. Black widow spiders can cause your heart to stop you would need to go to the hospital. Brown Recluse bite will eat your flesh to the bone. You would also need to go to the hospital for that they will give you a steroids or Dapsone. Try seven dust to keep spiders away. Brown Recluse and Black Widow's hang out in dark places. Be careful when going through boxes.

Apply ice to the bite and go to the ER, bring the spider, even it it's mangled up from killing it. Just put it in a plastic jar or a zip loc baggy.
Here's a site that'll help you identify the spider:

And unless you have a medical condition you won't die. The bite will cause pain, sometimes a lot, but people usually do not die or have serious problems after a bite. There is of course always the exception to the rule, like really old people, really young children, people with a heart condition and so on.........
