In the event of a robbery, they will lock the doors until the police arrive, and they may stay locked for the rest of the day - I used to wonder this as well, until I met someone who used to manage a 7-11, so I asked him. That was what he said, and I guess it makes sense.

Have you ever seen those "stupid criminal" videos where the clerk has to lock the door to keep out some "stupid criminal"... usually some drunk or drugged 'waste of blood' person who is so strung out they can't even rob a 7-11 without getting locked out... and the best is when they throw things at the door and they bounce back and hit them in the head and knock them out... boy, that's entertainment...!

Building Codes, Commercial buildings are required to have security features such as Locks for insurance purposes. They also need the locks in emergency situations, such as a lock down for tornado's, storms, hurricanes, etc...

Another reason, doors are designed with locks built in, why cost more to costum build.

Hope that helps.
