The car ignition has an interlock to prevent a child from starting the engine. Step on the brake and that should do it. If you are still stuck then it might be a problem with the shift lever not being fully engaged in Park. In rare instances you have to clear the steering wheel by giggling it back and forth to get the ignition cylinder unlocked.

some GM ignition lock cylinders grab for some reason. i have examine it has to do with having too many keys on the foremost ring, which places further weight on the ignition key, which attracts on the lock cylinder. i have also examine that it has to do with metallic shavings from the foremost being deposited in the lock cylinder and causing it to snatch. i'm no longer optimistic if both of those are real. in case you search for on eBay, you'll get a clean lock cylinder for round $one hundred twenty 5. The broking service will cost a lot a lot extra. There are shops obtainable except the broking service which have put in fairly a number of those. in search of one in all then out will save assorted money.

I believe that in some cars, the steering wheel being locked would keep it from starting. We had a car that did that, and it had to be put into gear without the key before it would start. If that doesn't work, maybe turn the steering wheel a little back and forth, and try to start it.

Take the pressure off the lock by giving your steering wheel a nudge against it's tension. When your steering lock engages, it puts a deadbolt through a disk at the center of your steering wheel. If your steering wheel has any tension (pulling one way or the other), it'll jam the deadbolt in place with friction. Relieve the tension, and the deadbolt will be free to move when you turn the key.

Lots of probable causes
Is there gas?
Is there oil?
Is there enough electricity in the car?
Is there an oil leak in the engine?
Are the spark plugs clean and in good shape?
Maybe there's a malfunction with the engine (if thats the case, its better to invest in a new car).
and many more causes..

That will be the starter. Go to the nearest auto-zone and make sure you know the make and model and order a new one. But you will have to know someone who will know how to install it.
