You don't say what kind of ants, so???? First I would try Amdro. DON'T put it directly on the mound. Sprinkle it away from the mound far enough to not disturb the ants. If you sprinkle it and you see the ants pouring out then your TOO close. The right distance is when the ants keep doing their thing but after about 5 or 10 minutes you will see the workers carrying the poison into the nest. When a nest is at the base of a tree it's a good indication you have cavities in the tree that require filling. If there not fire ants then get some Malathion and double the 1gal rate. Put it into a sprayer and kick the mound and start spraying as they start trying to get away.

Grits is one option to use as for supposedly they will eat the grits and the moisture will cause them to explode.
Boric acid is an option too.
I want to say that somewhere I heard you can use bay leaves to drive them away from an area.
Like someone mentioned before, if they have infested the tree, you will need to remove it as for it may damaged the tree and cause you further injury if the tree were to fall.
You can also try online, or at a local pest control store to see if they have DEMON WP. This is about the same strength that the pest control places use, and I have used it numerous times with wonderful results. There is also a book that has been offered on a tv infomercial that provides several different organic solutions to pest problems. I'm not sure how to get it as for I always miss the number to call, but it could be something to check out.

mix some boric acid with sugar and water in a jar and punch some holes on the jar lid so the ants can get into the jar. Put it out by the tree and the ants will come and drink the mixture and die. It's organic and will not harm other plants and animals, only the ants.

If they are big black ones, then they are carpenter ants and you have a problem. Need to call Orkin or some company with strong chemicals to kill them. Also if you have low lying branches over your garage, cut them. Carpenter ants can't fly, but they can jump and they will. Ate the whole side of my garage.

we've a pest administration provider come out and spray. We checked and positioned one which using puppy and baby secure products and havent seen ants provided that we all started. also you would attempt putting the puppy nutrients up except for 0.5-hour two times an afternoon. that would decrease down on ants to boot.

Pour grits around the mound.
Also some lids with boric acid in them. It attracts the ants and gets on their bodies and back down into the hive. It's poison to them. The grits will get them as well when they carry it down and eat it.

go to your nearest good garden center and ask for diatamous earth , this is a non chemical solution read the directions they will tell you to sprinkle the powder in the path of the nest and the powder will stick to the ants and grind holes in to them and they die Ive used this by my hummer feeder and stopped them from robbing the feeder
