Not 'recently' painted... the fumes keep them away, but one that was painted last fall, Ive seen them nest in, right away.

So, you just need to plan on leaving plenty of time for the birdhouse to 'cure out', so the paint smell fades.

I have never heard of that. I think they will nest in one that is painted or not painted. I don't know if they see colors.

I have some older painted birdhouses,and they use them. I guess the fumes answer makes sense.
