Was Slavery a hidden issue in the early 19th century in America?

How could slavery ever be a hidden issue when you have an oppressed people? Maybe people did not think much about slavery being the right wing of the bird called 'evil.' However, we must never forget that real and loving people were slave owners and executioners.

Any issue is a hidden issue unless people stand up for what they believe and make the world know what they want; whether respect or freedom. Personally, have u had someone telling you "be yourself"?
