I can relate, I'm a server as well. IMHO I always give excellent service, when I'm on the floor I do my best. If a customer doesn't complain and lives me a bad tip, I am offended because unless I know they are not satisfied, I expect 15-20 percent of the bill. Most of the time I get just that or more. You do have the few percentages of the population that come in though that make you cringe, and of course this is just from what I've seen over the years, and doesnt go for everyone. The people who make us cringe are the teenagers, the old people, the foreigners, rude from the get go people, and sad to admit the african americans. I'm not trying to offend, this is just what I've experienced and heard from other servers, and MOST of the time find to be true myself. Most of the people who tip crappy are just stingy...or they know what to tip and just don't give a care, afterall it's not their source of income.
I've also had my share of bad service while dining out, but unless I've told the server or complained to management about the food/service, I leave at least 10 percent!! I know what the servers make per hour, and they depend on their tips.
If you get less than acceptable service why not bring it to your servers attention? Just like you they can't mind read if you are not happy. Say something for petes sakes!
Another thing to take into consideration is that your server is the one who brings you your food and drink...they aren't responsible for cooking your steak to perfection, that's the kitchens job. Again, if you are not happy with the food, ask your server to get a manager for you so they can correct the mistake. To sit there and get your panties in a wad over it and then take it out on your server is just a lousy thing to do.
To those of you who tell us to "get a real job", my gosh then who would in the world would bring you your meal, clean your plates off and refill your drinks? You'd have to go to McDonalds or chinese buffets all the time...no more Outback Steakhouse or Olive Garden. Somebody has got to do that job, so why not have some respect?? Most of us actually ENJOY the job we do, and take pride in the service we give. What's funny is, where I work there are alot of people with college degrees who make alot more money serving than in their chosen profession...so remember when you are out that you are not dealing with a bunch of idiots who can't find a better job because most of us like what we do. For the crappy servers out there...the ones with the stinking attitudes who couldn't do their job if they worked at a McDonalds drive thru, and you know who you are....maybe it's time to look for a different profession because dealing with the public just might not be for you.

If this actually happened the manager and waiter were in the wrong. While just about every waiter/waitress "expects" a tip, the amount is something that needs to be "earned". The general acceptable amount is between 15%-18%. But this is based on the amount before tax and before any discounts. I don't believe in "stiffing" a waiter/waitress. If I have bad service instead I leave a very minimal tip so they may get the message. But also if I have excellent service I will tip in the 18-20% range. In fact I recently had probably some of the best service I have had at a restaurant in a long time and that server got close to a 25% tip.

first of all i've been a server and a bartender and tipping is a gratuity, or a small amount of money given voluntarily as a token of appreciation for a service rendered. good service=good tip. bad service=no or less of a tip. with that said our society has taught us that 10-20% is the norm. 10% being the starting point of a tip and it could go up to 20% or more depending on how nice of a place you work at and how good the service was.
i'm also curious to know where the heck are you from that only has a 2.00 minimum wage...in Alaska it's 7.50 and it's going up again.

i totally understand. i always tip as if my mother or neighbor is watching. and i also tip no matter what. i don't care if the food or service is lousy. i hope that by tipping well that the waiter/waitress will try harder in the future.
I have a standard $3.00 minimum tip for meals under $10 and a $5.00 minimum for meals over $10.
I totally know how it is to live off of tips!
Also, when I go to casinos, i tip $5 a drink whether it be a bottle of water or a bloody mary. i tip even more if i'm winning. i'd rather a poor cocktail waitress get the money than a greedy casino.
if the meal is like 5 bucks, you know, like at waffle house, i could not bear to leave a dollar tip, even though that's 20 percent. so i always leave 3 bucks plus the change. i still feel cheap.

Tipping is optional and its 15-20% of total bill for wait staff, 15% of bottle price for sommalier and 15% of bar bill to bartender.
Mad servers do not get any tips from me. If you just bring me my food and then don't come back until I am finished eating, you get no tip. If you are not smiling and not friendly, no tip.
If you say to me, Miss, I just have to compliment you on your food order, I enjoy the same dishes, then you have just made 20 bucks added to a tip.

I hear ya sister! I'm a server too... usually I'm happy to get $1 per customer at the table, that's below 15% but the area I live in is really bad about tipping... our entire waitstaff dreads when the welfare checks come out every month cause it means we're going to run our asses off, get treated like ****, and not make any money!

If I get poor service, I tip next to nothing, if get excellent service, I tip what the server deserves. Unless the tip has already been added onto my bill. My husband is well known for not tipping at all.

You arrogant pig. In polite society there is no standard for tipping. A tip is intended as a gratuity offered as a polite gesture for good or beyond average service. It is intended to be a gesture of gratitude meant to be over and above the salary you earn in your chosen job. If I receive poor service, I never feel amiss leaving 0%.
Perhaps ask your employer why he is paying you an unfair or un-livable wage. Why should patrons have to supplement or bankroll his staff bill.

The standart is 18%.Under that is OFFENSIVE. If you plan to leave 15%, don't even bother going to a restaurant.
Good service:over 20%.
When it's busy, don't expect your server to spend 20 minutes talkng to you about the weather!
