Not sure about other locations, but I am looking at the stripes right now in San Francisco, and I believe they are on *every pole* in California, ruling out the suggested possibility of marking a "bad pole."

Dang man! I just went and climbed to the top of my pole and never saw a thing. Got Electrocuted and fell 30 feet.
Depends where the Stripes are. May be just for cars to see better at night.

What stripes!?

I climb telephone poles and I know sometime they mark them as dangerous and not to climb, need to be replaced. maybe thats why.

I don't know either we don't have any stripes here.
Probably so you can tell the pole is there.
