I bought the computer thinking that it would be ready to go. It must not be. What parts do I need, or what do I need to do to make it work? How do I know if I have the parts or not? I've been trying to make it work at school, where it's free wireless, but it won't. I even had someone who knew what she was doing try, and it worked on hers but not mine. I'm not usually so computer-stupid! But I've never dealt with WiFi before.

you may need to turn the card on. If this is a laptop some come with wifi turned off by default. Gateway is that way. Press the function key and the litte tower button some times f2. also if it is a laptop flip it over and remove the cover and check to make sure both wires are attached to the card. also at school your compter may not have access grated by the schools servers to let you onto their network. Talk to the IT dept at school.

You should be able to use the WI-FI feature at local coffee shops and other free hot-spots in your area. FYI, just because you happen upon an open wireless network does not mean you can connect to it and steal their Internet service. This is called theft of services and is similar to plugging in an extension cord to you neighbors house without permission.

if you just bought it, then turn it in, and change it or you can buy a wireless card to get the wireless signal for internet. But just in case check the device manager, if like you said you bought it because it came with it, then it should be there

Depends on your Wireless Access Point/Router. Most decent ones have logging software either on them, or that you can load on to your computer. This will log what is being done by the router. You may only have the information by IP address, but you can always spot check a few of the IP's by typing them into the address bar.

well you need to be close to the wifi hotspot to pick up the signal, since i think thats the problem that your having.
if the wifi is built into the laptop i would suggest getting an usb/pcmcia card with a external ariel since that would allow u to get a greater range.

hmm..would it be because you need a lan card. if the laptop has an built-in lan card. then by right, it would detect the available networks automatically. perhaps you are missing a lan card.

i hope i am right.
