My first and only fluent language is English. I used to speak Spanish very well thanks to 5 years study in school, but it gets rusty when I don't use it.

I'm learning French right now. My boyfriend is French Canadian and while he is fluently bilingual, I think it's respectful to learn his mother tongue. The "how" on this is very amusing. I do have a cheapy computer program and audio program which I use from time to time. They mostly help with pronounciation and vocabulary. I bought a Canadian French workbook that was created for adult Anglophones who want to learn French. THAT has been very useful.

The bulk of my "teaching" comes from my boyfriend himself. He gives me words and phrases that come up in regular conversation or that are relevant to something going on at that time. The fun (although sometimes maddening) part is that he teaches me all sorts of stuff that one does not say in polite company. I'm scared to death that someday one of these words will be too close to the word I really want to use and will slip out in front of some Franophones.

I grew up speaking English only.

In school I learned a bit of French, enough to ask basic questions and understand a little if the person speaks slowly. I can read and write it better than I can speak it.

I learned quite a bit of everyday Spanish for boaters while sailing - we traveled to countries where Spanish is the official language.

I did 2 university linguistics courses that studied the Inuktitut (we used to say Eskimo) language and after that I spent 14 years in the Canadian north, so I learned enough Inuktitut to have a good selection of basic vocabulary and can understand everyday conversation.

I did 5 years of Latin in school, which I think has helped a great deal when I attempt to learn other languages.

Ich spreche Deutsche. I took 3 years of German in High School... at my high school in order to graduate on the college prep course you had to take at least 2 years of a foreign language. My school offered German, French, and Spanish. I'll be learning another language next semester as I've signed up for a college course in French to meet my Multicultural credit requirement

♡English, it's my native language. Spanish, learned it in high school, University then lived in Mexico a time to become fluent and natural. Japanese, moved here about 9 years ago and learned from native speakers in order to live well and communicate with family, friends, neighbors. (*^o^*)Being in the environment has helped me the most, speaking with native speakers is very helpful for pronunciation and natural speaking. Just my opinion.♡
