I need five keyed alike locks. I bought schlage. They make a set of only 4 keyed alike. Can I key alike the fifth myself rather than giving 10 dollars to a locksmith.

Take the key to where you bought it. Home depot and Lowes charge about $3 or 4 per key.

I have taken out locks and keyed them to a key, but, you have to know what your doing.

First you have to locate where the soldered joints are, so that you can drill them out. Then remove the springs, and then get the tiny slivers of metal (looks like flint), out, and then, you insert the key, and see which ones, or, if you have to get higher ones, to put back in. Then you have to resolder, or jam up the holes "just right" so that the springs are going to stay put, and if you dont, it messes up the whole configuration. It has to be soldered smooth, so that you can insert the lock chamber back into the lock itself...

If you never did it before, no, I wouldnt suggest you do it, because you have no idea of what your doing and how to achieve your goals...

This was an illistration of what you have to go through, and then, if everything is right, it "may work". (Yep, I had to take things apart a few times that were keyed just right, because of some little insignifigant thing that went wrong, and that "thing" prevented it from working....

Spend the 10 bucks, its cheaper and you dont want to spend hours "learning" to find out that you ruined the locks! (I just happened to have a whole bunch of locks laying around from doors I got rid of, and kept the locks, and had lots of time on my hands :)

I wish you well..

Do not go by workingman's advice. There is no drilling involved. I promise you that even if you have to pay the $10 for the rekey you will be much happier. Where you bought the locks should do it for free. It takes about five minutes if you know what you are doing and you have the right tools. Put a little pressure on them and they should do it for you.

Check with where you bought the locksets... they may be able to do it for you, or order a fifth lock to match the other four. The matching four should have a number on the package, so take that in to them, so they know what they need to match up too.
