The American ideal is "the bigger the better", but buying a gas-guzzling monster of a car just does not make sense to me.

because many people believe that luxury items mean that they are successful. also, many people buy extravagant items to mask the fact that they are deeply unhappy on the inside.

My SUV gets 24 MPG. NOt the best, but not terrible compared to some vehicles.

I have 4 wheel drive and feel that this is a lot safer than driving a 2 wheel drive vehicle during stormy weather, etc.

I also enjoy camping, etc with the family. Lots of room for travelling and kids in my SUV. NOt sure why there is such an outrage of SUV's being "gas guzzlers". Maybe some are worse than others? I've owned cars that got a lot worse gas mileage.

Many people own SUVs because they have large families, have hobbies that require lots of gear, or need the power to tow. Some people have them for the versatility or safety in a crash. Some people just like them and choose to spend their disposable income on gas rather than fancy clothing, or computer games, or whatever else others spend their money on. To each his own.

The great thing about a free country is anyone can drive an SUV if they want to, but nobody has to.

this was put to research by cnbc once. some do it as of a big family but all do it as the statis symbol. you won't see them driving a mini-van. it gets twice the mileage and can carry seven. but its not cool except for soccer moms. a few suvs are out that are a bit smaller and have alot of power and still give the statis and 22 to 26 mpg. every auto maker has muscle cars out in the 300 club and 600 club. thats hp. but they get good gas mileage. gas is in range if you compare the cost to refine 50 years ago to today. in many countries gas is at 7.00 or more a gallon.

In some cases families are forced to buy minivans and suvs due to a large family. However more often it is a small family or a single person. People like the feeling of power large vehicles give them, and there is an entire "scene" built around suvs.

How expensive does gas need to get before people accept that SUVs are just a waste of money? Also, they are more likely to flip or roll in an accident. What a great purchase!!

108 degrees in Sacramento yesterday-why would anyone drive on a black tar highway? (Probably occurs historically 1 in 7 summers, and usually much later in the summer. Usually high summer temp 103-104)

some people make PLENTY of money and aren't concerned about the price of gas or that Stupid Useless Vehicle....I'm actually one of those (or my wife is actually), but I am more worried about the environment than the price of gas...
