No necessity. Many do not celebrate. Many dont even know their DOB!!!( I mean dont remember it It comes and goes like any other day of the year!!!).
But what is wrong if some one wants to celebrate it. You enjoy good food good company and a Good time for some time.
EAT DRINK AND BE MERRY they used to say.
It is a reminder to us that we are ageing, getting grown up, more responsible to society. etc and are no more a child or teen etc etc.
In Hindu philosophy Celebration of 60th Birth day 70th Birth day 80th birth day 100 th birth day are important and you do some religious prayers to propitiate the Gods and seek their blessings further.
Same way the first year and repeating every year on the STAR birth date propitiation of the gods is done in India in orthodox Hindu families. But it is a simple home affair. No fanfare, no pomp and no glory!!!!

Birthdays should be a celebration of our life's and our victories over the hardships , losses and mistakes of the last year. Remember getting another year older is way better then the alternative.

It is to celebrate the day that you are born. If you are celebrating a child's birthday, it shows them that you care about them; it gives adults a reason to party (as if they needed one) LOL

to let the person know they are special and loved,to celebrate that person more on that day than maybe you have on an ordinary day. If you feel you are not enjoying the party or what not. Its your bday tell them what you want to do,but make some plan so they dont feel they have to ignore it.. just go to dinner and a movie

It's not necessary, but it's a fun way of marking the passage of time in your life.

I make a big deal out of my birthday. If I only get one day per year that's dedicated to me where I can feel special, I'm going to make the most of it.
