butterfly is swam entirely from the chest and hips. if you dont got rythm you probably cant swim the stroke to your full potential. make sure to press the "T" [line across youre shoulders and down your chest] and kick from your hips. dont breath on the first stroke coming off the wall but DONT hold your breath the whole time either. your muscles need oxygen to function so dont try to hold your breath. try breathin every 2 or 3 strokes. keep your arms straight on the recovery and make sure your timing is right so that youre breathing during the pull of the strok and not the recovery. dont kick from your knees either cuz you actually dont get much power from that. dont be too nervous either. its ok to be a little nervous.. mostly excited because thats when you are at your peak performance. try to have fun with it. sing a fast song while youre swimming to keep your rythm up. and dont let up on the last 10 yards. no matter how tired you get its almost over.
during training do lots of im sets because you get to work on fly as well as every stroke, and youre not stuck doing 10x100s fly over and over again. also do a 500 fly kick on your back to work on abs. push ups help too, as well as sit ups and lunges.
my coaches are constantly on me to work on my fly because its my weakest stroke. i swim im so they all have to be good. all this crap they tell me well i hope it helps you. just dont get psyched out. good luck!

Try to take breaths only every three or four strokes rather than breathing every time like you have to in the breast stroke. And kick as hard as you possibly can with your legs so your arms don't have to do all the work. Your legs can take more than your arms can usually. And make sure you are sprinting as hard as you can on the last 25 meters. You'll get tired, but the faster you get there, the faster you get to rest, and if you win you get to relax in the water while the losers finish up. Good luck with your meet!

The butterfly is not just arms & legs. It uses your whole body...arms, head, hips, feet. The easiest way to swim the butterfly is RELAXED! It all starts with the head. When your head goes down, your hips go up & when your head goes up, the hips go down. You do not need to breathe every time. In a 50, you shouldn't breathe much at all. When you do breathe, don't pull up, push forward. You don't want to come out of the water too much, you want to continue forward.

Defintely start working on your upper body. Push ups and weights are the best thing. When you're in the water, concentrate on using your legs together to help your arms out. Good luck with your meet! I won 1st place on a 100 m butterfly when I was 12, and these are things I did to prepare.

right first of all work your upper body like the previous answerer said, i would not recommend push ups however as it could mess with your stride, get some 10pound weights and bring them down by your side, now lift them above your head in a sort of windmill motion. this will get you used to the butterfly motion. in my swimming club we're taught to breath every fourth stroke. you still have to bring your arms out of the water even if your not going to breath. i recommend doing three hard dolphin kicks then one explosive one when you take your breath. good luck in your swim meet, i hope you do well and remember all it takes is practice

butterfly is the hardest and i'm still having trouble. you need to work on your upper body. so lift weights, that way you'll be stronger when you lift yourself out of the water to breathe. the less you breathe, the faster you are.
