The greatest player of all time in my opinion was good ol' Mickey Mantle his seasons with the Yankees were tremendous. After getting sick it ruined he home run streak and he could not break the record. But his teammate Roger Maris broke the record and fans were not happy, they would throw things onto the field aiming for him, sent hate letters, etc.

My opinion for the greatest player now would be Derek Jeter. I say this for the reason of all the things he has done, all the great plays, great hits, being the team capitan of the New York Yankees and everything else he has done. Derek Jeter has overcame all his problems on the field, like his broken bones and the scary moment of him flying into the stands.

I think those are two of the greatest players ever to live in the history of the ball game.

Sorry people, Clemens doesn't have to play defense, steal bases, or hit. WILLIE MAYS. Barry Bonds? This guys a cheat, those who don't thnk so must also think O.J. is STILL innocent. Willie Mays hands down. Arod ? Now that's funny-why? Because he hits 50 homers a year and...uh, what else does he do? Does he steal bases? No. Does he hit above a .310 clip every year? No. Is he great with the glove? No. He isn't even the best hitter on his team. And Pujols is the best POWER hitter right now. Not the best hitter. Joe Mauer and Travis Hafner are the hottest thing going in the A.L. ---WILLIE MAYS-best all-time.

It is difficult to say because the eras of baseball are so different in style and ability; Babe Ruth is clearly one of the most important players (along with Jackie Robinson, but for different reasons), but there is a legitimate argument over how good his opposition was, especially when you consider how many sluggers baseball produced in the 30's. I would confine my answer to players I have seen play, and it is still a multilple answer:

Best hitters: George Brett (darn him), Tony Gwynn
Best Power Hitters: Reggie Jackson, Manny Ramirez
Best All-around player: Rickey Henderson
Best Starting Pitchers: Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson
Best Reliever: Mariano Rivera

I think the best all time would be Cal Ripken, Jr...He is the picture of baseball...Played hard never whining about needing a day off..When baseball was going thru tough times with the strike, he just made it great to watch the game!
Today there isn't really a player like him...Close second would be Derek Jeter...

I'd say that Ted Williams should probably be considered the best of all time because of his hitting and hitting for power. The best hitter in baseball at the moment, and therefore the best player, is probably Ichiro Suzuki. He also plays a mean right field.

Best Pitcher- Nolan Ryan hands down. (7 no hitters and 5714 strikeouts let's see Clemens try and beat that)

Best Catcher- overall Johnny Bench

Best Player- Tossup between Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb, Stan Musial and Rickey Henderson

Biggest Cheater- Barry Bonds (doesn't deserve the credit)

Babe Ruth, 714 Home Runs, 60 in a season that was more to 2/3 of all the teams in MLB that year. 150 wins as a pitcher, Let's see Barry do that

Babe Ruth. He was one of baseball's best pitchers before he went on to become the greatest slugger in the game. He saved baseball after the Black Sox scandal tarnished the game's image.
