Why is racism still so big in North America? Where does this "white" superiority status come from?

This is a very sensitive question and the reason I am asking is that many times, latin people living in Canada suffer from "hidden" prejudice. In Canada people will not tell you up front but will:

- Exclude non-white from conversations
- Not allow minorities to succeed in business

For me this is really evident. I come from South America and it is really hard to build respect just for being a minority!

Help me folks!

As far as I am concerned, if you consider your self superior as a human being, you should be the first to eliminate racism...otherwise, I should consider myself superior, as I have zero tolerance for racism!

I say bigotry, Stupid people, fear, and unwillingness to change. I saw a guy on TV one time, can't remember who or what show it was, and he says the reason behind racism is, all those things i just said up there, and the fact that if a white person celebrates his heritage, it is nothing but racism to other cultures wether the white person is american, canadian, french or otherwise.If a black man celebrates his heritage, it is nothing but oppression and hatred for the white man. Black people have BET and have comics telling jokes about white people all the time, and some white people think it's funny, some white people get pissed. What if white people had WET and had comedians telling jokes about black people, the NCAA would throw a fit! I think his point in saying that was Everyone is just as racist as everyone else, you can't just label a whole color/culture/heritage whatever. not all black people are racist, but i'm sure some are, same goes for whites, reds, browns, yellows, everything! And i'm sure since you're from south america, a region where there are no racists, you do get some prejudice. But what if I, a white dude, went to South America and tried to make it? You think i would just mingle right in? WRONG!!! You have to make the choice yourself not to be racist or hateful. My friend and i get along just fine, he is black, whoopidy doo, our families are different but we have been best friends since we were 12, now 22. So it's up to individuals to make the difference.

Racism is rampant where I live. Not just the majority against the minority, but also the minority against the majority. I do not know any solution to this other than to treat all people the way that you would like to be treated. Just because someone is different from you is no reason to treat them like crap. They could be a really nice person. You also can't assume that all white people think that they are superior because this is also a stereotype that just perpetuates racism. Everyone deserves to be judged on their merit as a human being and not as a member of a particular race.

White superiority comes from the dominance of the caucasian race throughout the globe. It began with the Roman empire - all the way up to the British emp. Racism is rampant all over the place, I just think that white supremacy is more abundant, especially in places like North America where it's like a melting pot that some idiots just don't want to stir.

But don't worry! Times are changing! People get racism from their parents (mostly), so teach your children what's right and eventually we will see a progression in this matter. We've already come such a long way! ^_^

I think that is b.s ! Aborignals are out their being discriminate against whites as well . I'm not saying whites are better or aborignals are better or even minorities than each other. I think it is harder for getting respect for anybody because people do say alot of things. I think racism is coming from white people because white people can't handle the skin difference. I know this because I was watching I think Doctor Phil and the guy was being a racist A..hole. I think minority's don't get respect because everybody's afraid they might be terrorists or is that immigrants .

White Superiority comes from the European ideology of Imperialism and racism is still big in N.America because we live in a white society still. Everything caters to white people.

Old habits die hard I'm afraid. I think every area has discrimination of some kind. I don't think it's just North America. The middle east, sudan, rwanda... Of course those are extreme examples, but racism exists most everywhere. Just my opinion... NZ

i guess it feels like an invasion like here in america we get invaded by other countries, and most of them collect public assistance,, sure alot of them work hard,, a friend of mine who works for the social system said they come over with the same ailments, cant hear or see very well,, and they all get disability pay which we have to pay for while they get a free ride,, in san diego thay cut the womens prenatal program for residents but kept the one for illegals so there will be a back lash when they do stuff like that

I would say to you that if you were to look around Canada I think you will find that it is predominately a socialist country and thereby a non religious country...like the USSR was when it was steaped into socialism. Without faith in God why would you care about your fellow man.

Look around at Christian country's..you'll find that they are the major contributer to world care and tolerance.

The white or "caucasian" status comes from history. They assume that they are superior because they are the empire from which imperialism and capitalism came from.

For you make sure you can speak english (or french in Canada) fluently. People can be intimidated because they can't understand you. That could also keep you from advancing on in business.
