Witch Hazel is an astringent produced from the leaves and bark of the North American shrub, Witch-hazel. Witch Hazel is mainly used externally on sores, bruises and swelling. The main constituents of the extract include tannin, gallic acid, catechins, proanthocyanins, flavonoids ... It has been known to cure everything from hemmoroids to cold sores. It's a natural product and that's why it has so many uses. I use it ALL THE TIME. It was a product that was forever in my house growing up and I still use it today. witch hazel is an astringent. It is good for cleansing the skin without removing the natural oils. It is soothing for sun burn. For sore puffy eyes, dip cotton balls in witch hazel and place them over your eye lids. Very soothing. I do not know where the name comes from.
