I am trying to have a good seal on a connection between the garbage disposal drain and PVC pipe. Will putting plumber's putty around the pipe do the job?

If plumbing putty won't do, what is the best material to seal the connection between garbage disposal and drain pipe?

Thanks jim_d and mr_jim51, yours were the best answers and I was able to resolve the problem. I found a 'disposal gasket' from Lowes and was able to fit it perfectly. For those who want to see what this looks like, I found an online store that sells the same thing. http://www.homeandbeyond.com/prod-0074665.html

Thanks again everyone for your input!

Jim d is right about the rubber washer or poly washer. Plumbers putty has no business on a kitchen drain other than basket strainers,

No, you need to glue PVC pipe, plumber's putty is not ment to hold a pressure fitting. You can use plumber's putty between the basket and the sink form the basket is in to form a standing water seal only.

it is hard to tell what the black 90 is in the pics , here is my solution get a furco boot
fit it to the size pipe, looks like you are trying to fit 1-1/4 to 1-1/4
lowe makes a rubber boot with band clamps
Plumbers putty will not stop leakage( been there)

No. A rubber gasket between the drain and disposal is required and should be tightened snug . Some of the drain connections use plastic slip nut gaskets . If the connecting slip nut adapter is beveled on the inside edge then you need a plastic slip nut gasket if it is flat you need a rubber gasket to seal it

Great Question! I do think this will work but you may need to refer to the manual that came with the disposal.

It will do the job if you make sure you get it all the way around the pipe
