My first recommendation is know your options. In other words, know which airlines serve your origin and destination. You might consider other airports close to your origin and destination for other alternatives.
When you know your options, you need to try to explore these options by browsing through the airline sites, other reservation sites like Travelocity or Expedia, visit a travel agent, or even call the airline itself. There's no unified formula for the laws of fare search. Unfortunately, there's not even professional tools that can help online. I usually go to Travelocity and enter the origin and destination I want, choosing the "flexible dates" option. This will give a list of fares available. I then try to match the fares given to my plans to come up with the best fare I can find.

I'm always checking everywhere for cheap flights 'cause of my long distance relationship. I've found cheaptickets.com to be the best way to go. It runs about the same as all the other sites (travelocity, orbitz, etc) and sometimes is cheaper. It's also easy and safe to use.

go to the on-line travel sites get costs times. Then check your airlines like southwest and I think US Air you have to go to their site. Usually get just as good if not better on some airline sites like ones I noted also heard jet blue good. The sooner the better the best prices are 14-21 days before you travel

Go to the individual airlines for flight only. Only try Orbitz, Priceline, et al if you're looking to get a flight, a rental car, and a hotel.
