Employees will refer the areas that the customers have access to the "front of the restaurant".

The kitchen and other employee areas are often referred to as "the back of the house".

It is simple, really. The front of the house is the dining area where patrons are seated to dine. The back of the house (house is the word used in the hospitality industry to describe a restaurant) is the kitchen and other non public areas of the facility.

From the street and for customers, it would be the restaraunts main entrance. From a workers point of view, it would be where business with the customers takes place (as opposed to the kitchen, supply and storage areas in the 'back').
