Well they really don't destory the house...they can and will if not controlled do serious damage to the wood....look around your house and look for any wood that is part of your house that touches the ground...also any wood pieces in the crawl spaces needs to be removed...left there and you are just asking them to belly up to the buffet...Get a termite company to come out and spray they can't do anything about the damage done only stop any more from happening...remember they naturally live in the gound and eat wood so check for damage from the gound up..if you find a mud line on the concrete funadtion ...looks like a mud straw...that is how they travel up to your wood from the ground...If you find any wood that looks like paper with gaps between them this needs to be replaced....Hope this helps and if you have any more question you can email me at wood42ras@yahoo.com

Termites per say do not destroy a house, they will however do a tremendous amount of damage to the wood structure if not controlled. If you suspect termites, get proffessional help ASAP. I assure you that the longer you wait, the worse it gets.
On the lighter side: have you heard about the Termite who walked into a Bar and asked 'WHERE IS THE BARTENDER'?

The simple answer is yes idf the construction of the house is such that the termites can chew the materials (including mortar) ....obviously the degree of damage will vary and would hopefully be "terminated" before such a stage was reached
