It's not that bad...if you want cheap. It is in a great location.
Really are you coming to Vegas to spend all the time in the room...NO OF COURSE so who cares as long as it's got a shower and somewhere to lay your head for a few hours.

I've stayed there 3 times. It's clean and reasonable. Not much more. Do not get a room that is over the outside bar at Harrah's. Some of the rooms at the Imperial Palace face that bar. It is noisy until 2 in the morning! You can't block the music. Get a room on the east side. Don't eat the buffet and go to the Sahara for $3 blackjack tables.

If I had a choice, I wouldn't stay there just because there are other hotels close in price that are nicer with equivalent locations. However, I have no choice because a tour I'm going to be on will be using the hotel. I read some of the other replies to this question and grew concerned.
So, I went to TripAdvisor.com to see what other people are saying (besides those answering this question). I read some excellent reviews about this hotel. Granted, it seems that many of the reviews came from people who are not used to Las Vegas hotels but the reviews were quite detailed and stated the reasons that the people were pleased and so I'm not worried.
I stayed at the IP about 12 years ago and not since. It will be interesting to see what things are like now.

I agree with Maryjane, I lived there too. You arent gonna spend much time in your room other than to sleep and shower. It centrally located so, its in a good spot. Not my favorite either. The hotel and rooms are old and do wreak of stale smoke. The monorail runs between certain hotels, not the entire strip, so keep that in mind. Its not a flashy hotel, just your basic hotel/casino.
I too am a hotel snob and I worked at the Mirage, so Im biased to the MGM properties. The east side of the tower is quieter in the late night hours, I'll confirm that. There are millions of rooms in Vegas, each with their own theme and decor. Just go to have a good time, dont worry too much about the room if you are staying where you can afford.
If you are going to be there mid-week, all of the hotels have good rates, most under $100. Weekends, it doesnt matter, they are all high. It just depends on what you are looking for and what you want out of your room other than a place to lay your head. If you go to the hotels website there is calendar with their rates by days so that you can have an idea of what to expect. Then check out Hotels.com to see if you can find a discount, sometimes you can sometimes its the same price and with out booking fee's.

I have stayed there before. Rooms are clean & you're in the middle of the strip. This hotel does not have any major shows to see, but you are close to all the others. I don't smoke & the lobby was full of it so I didn't gamble there. Las Vegas now has a mono rail that takes you around the strip. Some of the best shows are expensive, but worth the high dollar.

I refused to stay there. I've been inthe rooms and they reeked of smoke. The halls and rooms were incredibly noisy with frat boys and drugged out/drunk people. The casino is creepy.
Yes, it's in a great location and you'll probably only be there to sleep, so that *can* be a great reason to stay. It just doesn't do it for me, even if it were free. But, I'm a hotel snob! ; )

try the Barbary Coast - a much overlooked hotel that is very reasonable. The rooms have recently been redone and have nice, flat screen TVs. You can get a non-smoking room. It is in the middle of the Strip- diagonally across from the Bellagio.
