are most? no
Chrianity has millions of people around the world.....many of whom see the words and deeds of Jesus in complete contridiction to the policies and actions of the american republican party.
why are they?
pat roberston
it has nothing to do with values and everything to do with political machinery and exploitation.
You phrased it correctly, christians became ruplicans rather than being repulican leads you to faith.
It has a very long history but i'll try to be consise,
it began around the late 70's and early 80's as a concerted effort by the Republican party.
remember Carter was considered a very christian man, whereas regan kept his religion out of his politics.
so why the sudden shift,
the republican party got smart and used churches as
political players.
as you may remember Pat Robertson, {who is in my opinion not a man of god by his words and deeds.}
ran for president after regan.....with the machine of evangelical churchs.
In the Iwoa primaries, George Bush Sr came in third, Pat roberson came in first.
Believe or not George Bush Jr, and consultants helped GHB Sr pull off the upset.
After George Bush Sr. won the presidency with only the Evangelical vote, losing the Jewish, Black and Catholic vote...
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/jesus/view/
All bets were off and we have the modern
system where evangelicas are not so much pandered to as used
i.e Gay marriage, abortion,
real christians, are for peace and helping the poorest of our communites.....
not tax breaks.
**on a side note, black communites are very religious and tend not to vote republican

I don't think anybody likes the war in Iraq except Bush himself. As for the death penalty I agree with you for that exact reason. Only God has the right to take life. I think most Christians say "An eye for an eye" but that was under old Mosaic law that NT Testament Christians are not held to. I personally am a Christian and a republican because I agree with the party fiscally and morally, i.e. the right to life in all cases, traditional marriage, etc. Also the liberals are so out to lunch I could never align myself with them. Can't wait till 2008 though so we can get a real republican in office, instead of an incompetent fool.

No one LIKES war, the Republicans are simply the only group willing to admit that ours is a world governed by the aggressive use of force. If it were not for America, the Soviets would have probably taken everything over. If it were not for America, terrorists around the world would have been further emboldened to increase the severity of their attacks. Peace in the current world is ONLY gained by superior strength, you may not like that, but it is fact.
Yes Republicans, generally, believe in the death penalty for violent criminals that are repeat offenders. You can be against the death penalty and many Republicans are as well. But you cannot rationally argue that you are a Democrat because you are anti capital punishment!?!
I will take a party for the execution of the scum of the earth long before I will support a party that revels in the murder of innocent unborn children.

Being Christian does not translate easily into liberal versus conservative, Democrat versus Republic. Every President without fail has been a Christian, some quite devout (thought some of the early ones were nondenominational deists). Jimmy Carter was the first born-again and he was hardly a Republican.
In recent years the most successful Christian advocacy groups have tended to support Republicans and their core platform: anti-abortion, anti-gay, against contraception and extramarital sex, pro family, child protection, for personal responsibility, etc. But these groups are also in favor of health care, eliminating poverty, preserving the environment as God intended it to be, avoiding unnecessary war, economic conservatism, and so on, and as the Republican party has moved away from these ideals they are starting to lose some of their loyal base. I'm not sure the Democrats will pick up the slack but some Christian conservatives feel alienated by the Republican party.

Whoa, hold on, major generalization. First of all, yes, I am a Christian, no I'm not a Republican, or a Democrat. Sometimes my interests coincide with a Democratic candidate, sometimes with Republican.
That said, I do NOT like war. I don't think anyone really does. War is ugly, evil, and horrible...but unfortunately, sometimes you have to resort to it, much like we did in WWII. The world is NOT a good place with humans in it, and sometimes war is necessary.
No Republican really likes war.
Yes, God wants peace, but It also understands that humans are not perfect, and it is honorable to fight for your country, or to go where you're told if it's your job (military). Also, with evil in the world, just talking to the corrupt leaders who want to bomb everyone isn't going to do any good, is it? That's a rhetorical question, by the way.
As far as the death penalty goes, it is NOT wrong to kill someone if it's been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they did something that warrants the death penalty. It's better to take them out, rather than let them drain money out of the taxpayers' wallets, or let them out of prison so they can commit the same crime again. And again. And again. And again. And...yeah.
Has God put a murderer to death lately? Don't think so. If It did, we wouldn't NEED the death penalty. It's up to us to govern the world, and each other.
God gave us the Earth for that purpose...which is why murderers aren't killed by God.
So what exactly are you trying to prove? War is senseless, but not un-Christianlike. The death penalty is harsh, but not half as harsh as what many of them are getting in the afterlife, or as harsh as what they doled out.

Also the party's belief is contradictory to christian principles. God wants us to choose from right and wrong and gives us a choice. Republicans don't want women or Americans to have a choice they want to play God, a little satanic if you ask me. If he didn't want us to choose he would make us. Do we as Republicans know that God is in charge of everything and does not need us to take away our choices. We still must follow the laws of the land, but we can not make a law for everything. OOps what am I saying, my Senator just turned flips. Also we believe that we should be separate from poor people and they should determine their own future. Jesus said the poor you will have always have among you. Seen any poor people around Conservatives lately?Republicans don't believe in giving poor people a hand up to succeed. Most republicans complain about paying taxes and most go to shady Tax man to cheat on their Taxes. Sounds a little like generalization, but I'm republican looking for the people with true christian values. I'm a christian before I'm republican I think we get the two confused they are not intertwined. "It is easier for a camal to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven."

i am a christian and a republican. I'm not saying that war is right just to have a war but i mean like how we are in war right now i think that it is for a good reason I'm sorry but i really wouldn't like to get blown up or have another terrorist act on our country. As for the death penalty its a way of punishment you kill somebody your life is taken. When Jesus walked the earth and someone killed someone else there were punishments and in some case you were crucified so therefore the death penalty isn't totally wrong. Get my drift?

Absolutely not. Under Carl Rove, the Republican party has cozied up to the most fundamentalist and aggressive of the Christian churches because they have a well-organized activism and will vote over legislating issues of morality into law. They will also politicize their churches to lobby for candidates, and several are at risk of losing tax-exempt status over that.
This formerly non-voting segment most likely tipped the last two elections.
But plenty of Christians, especially in the mainstream churches, see ending poverty as a more important moral issue, and the Republican party does not address that.
