I'm in a graduate level MBA program where the course designers think team work is the best. I know in the real world, there is a need for teamwork, however, in the real world, the team can fire or kick someone off, but in this program, the only thing we get is lazy people who slide through the classes letting others do the work.

I realize that everyone on the team brings something to the table, which is a good thing. What ticks me off is that no matter how much you call them out, prod them or try to motivate them, they know they truly don't have to do anything and still get the grade. And when we graduate, they still get an MBA just like I do and they didn't do half the work I have.

Amen. I asked the same question in graduate school. I have two responses.

1. Teachers don't have to teach when you do group projects. Group projects make their job easier.

2. In the real world you work in a team environment where others get the benefit of your efforts. A lesson in reality.

Either way group projects are bogus.

And just because you have scholastic knowledge behind you, I can see that YOU really need to learn to be a team player. Yes, there are always the lazy ones in every team project, but the teacher knows this and is counting on you to motivate the team using your skills. Each person on the team has ideas no matter how big or small that can impact the project, and by working as a team you learn valuable strategy skills that you will use not only in business but in every day life. Instead of complaining about someone being lazy, look for the reason why they may be that way(maybe they have been told their ideas are stupid....) and as a team member see what you can do not only for the project but also for your fellow team members.

In the real world lazy (or busy or distracted) people will be on your team. It's just a part of life. It's very hard to fire people in the corporate world, and some people are on multiple projects and just committed to some more than others. Some folks have issues going on at home that sometime prevent them from being fully motivated. Great leaders are skilled at getting people to want to do things for them. It's a tough skill to develop for most of us and this is a good opportunity for you to work it and get a jump start.

Team projects are suppose to help you learn to work together in a group of peers. It's "suppose to be" a give-and-take thing where you learn from each other. When you get out of school, and into the "real" world you will often have to work with others in an office enviornment. The hope is that the "less smart" student will learn from the "smarter" student. Peers often learn better from peers than from teachers. I grant you, it doesn't always work that way, but in many cases it does, which is why they continue to use that teaching method.

That same lazy person some day may end up being your staff member and you their boss. They are not sliding any where it will define the leaders from the followers. So take charge learn how to deal with low motivated people it is a good life lesson ...

You need to set out the ground rules in the beginning and eject the poor performers. It's poor management skills that allow the sliding.

There should be a provision to eject the person. If not bring up the slacker on academic dishonesty charges. There are ways to handle this. You're going for your MBA for goodness! THINK!

I can totally relate had this at work also.I did all the work for 7 months and my co-worker sat on there butt for 7 mounts I ended up quiting and within two weeks they fired the slacker and was begging me to come back. I went back at a much higher rate of pay.
I think the teacher is trying to show you what real life is going to be. Its how we do dynamics of business.Though its not fair at all.

I know what you mean! I've giving A's to a few people myself!
But, those lazy people will hopefully soon get a rude awakening when they can't figure out the jobs they went to school to learn! There WILL be a time in most of their lives, whether it be tomorrow, or 10 years from now, when they will regret being so stupid about their education.

Because you have lazy teachers. I have yet to see any group project where everyone pulls the same weight. The kids who know you do not want your grades to drop will let you do all the work and sit back. It even goes on in college. (SHOCK), And the kids doing it in college are preparing to be professionals somewhere kinda scary huh.

This is very funny to smart for your own good. Wait till you graduate and find out you have to work with all those lazy people and you come to find out they don't get fired that easy. You could be the one that gets fired because you can't adjust to work with all those lazy people.
