It happened around 9am Eastern time. I would just tell him the truth of what happened. Tell him that there are crazy people out there in the world that do terrible things.

very carefully. The best thing to do is to get information about the tragedy from different sources and then let the 11 yr old ask questions. Allow them to ask whatever questions they need to instead of explaining the event through the questions you had/have about it, let them ask the questions. Kids think on a whole different level than us adults. When they ask a question you don't know the answer to, tell them that you don't know but this is a good way for the two of you to investigate together and get some understanding. Seeing the tragedy through my eyes and then living it through my 7 & 8 yr old, gave me a whole different perspective on the event.

Just tell him/her. You hide them from reality forever and 11 is an age old enough to take it. It was early morning it happened.

Take her to the library, there are over 50 books on the subject. There will be something age appropriate for her.
