A Trans Am is a trim package as well as perfomance package, every Trans Am will have a V8 engine in it and all Firebirds will have a V6 that is the biggest difference. There are also many changes in appearance between the two.

Trans Am is a trim and performance package for the Firebird. All Trans Ams are Firebirds, but not all Firebirds are Trans Ams.

Trans Am usually was a "high performance" model package. The factory built them with the options so you wouldn't have to order them ala carte . You could outfit a firebird with most of the same options to have similar performance.

Trans am's always have the bigger motor where a firebird can have a 6 cyl. Trans am's are more performance

not much, really. Based on the Camaro body/chassis, but one had Pontiac liverage, the other was chev. Pontiac, made Trans-ams, Chev made the fire chickens
